It is one of the busiest airports in Europe, with a single central terminal around Schiphol Plaza. From the airport to the city

NS train — fast, but ends at the station
The NS train station is directly beneath Schiphol Plaza, one level below the arrivals hall. Direct trains to Amsterdam Centraal in ~15–17 min (from ~€5.50), and to Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Fast and cheap, but you end up at a station — not at your hotel, and inconvenient with a lot of luggage at rush hour.
Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397)
Bus 397 runs from Schiphol to the centre of Amsterdam (Museumplein / Leidseplein) in ~30–40 min, from ~€6.50. Fixed stops, not door-to-door, and not always comfortable with large suitcases on a crowded bus.

The official taxis wait in front of Schiphol Plaza at Arrivals. Amsterdam taxis are relatively expensive — a ride to the centre often runs to €45–€55 on the meter, variable with traffic. We drive the same trip for a price you know in advance.
